Supporting Mental Health for LGBTQ+ Students at Every Stage of Their Journey

May 19, 2025 | By NRCF Team

Mental health care looks different for everyone. We’re often taught to prioritize physical health – to eat well, stay active and get enough rest – but what about caring for our minds? Especially when our thoughts feel heavy or clouded?

Whether you’ve publicly shared your identity or are still exploring who you are, you deserve support. There are many tools, resources, and communities ready to meet you where you are and help you build a stronger foundation for your well-being.

Navigating life as a LGBTQ+ student – whether out, not out, or somewhere in between – comes with different challenges. But you are not alone.

Support Tailored to You

At National Rainbow College Fund (NRCF), we know that every LGBTQ+ journey is unique — and mental health care should reflect that. Whether you’re looking for immediate crisis support, an affirming therapist or tools to manage daily stress, these resources are here for you:

  • The Trevor Project – 24/7 crisis support via phone, chat or text, specifically for LGBTQ+ young people. You don’t have to be out to get help.
  • Trans Lifeline – Peer-led support by and for the trans community. All calls are confidential.
  • Q Chat Space – A safe online space for LGBTQ+ teens to connect with others in live-chat, adult-facilitated support groups.
  • It Gets Better Project – Storytelling and resources that remind you: you’re not alone, and the future is brighter than you think.
  • Campus Pride – Offers a national database of LGBTQ+-friendly colleges and campus groups that may offer on-campus counseling and safe zones.
  • National Queer and Trans Therapists of Color Network – Helps you find an affirming therapist who shares or respects your lived experience.

You can find more vetted resources on our website: rainbowcollegefund.org/resources. Students currently enrolled at a college or university can also explore free and/or low-cost mental and behavioral health services offered by their school by visiting student health services.
